Parents Need Sleep Too

Rebecca Thompson Hitt had the opportunity to speak with physiotherapist and movement teacher, Mary Houston. Mary is an educator and strong advocate for Integrative Restoration (iRest) Yoga Nidra, a sleep-based meditation that can be done lying down. iRest Yoga Nidra is great for tired parents because most meditations are only 15 to 25 minutes long and can be listened to as you go to sleep, so you don’t have to find extra time in your day. Additionally, the tools that you learn in the meditation process can be practiced throughout the day, walking, sitting, or lying down.
iRest Yoga Nidra can also be practiced with children. In the US, Yoga Nidra is practiced in schools where, research shows, it helps to support children’s emotional development and resilience. Parents who practice iRest Yoga Nidra with their children in the same room often report their children also sleep better.

Research has shown that most people who practice Yoga Nidra report decreased anxiety, decreased insomnia, better sleep, calmer and more peaceful, less stressed; they also report to feeling like they have had 3-4 hours sleep after one 20 min Yoga Nidra ‘nap!’

Additionally, iRest Yoga Nidra decreases emotional reactivity and increases emotional resilience, so it makes you less snappy and cranky and irritable, and more patient and tolerant and calmer. And who doesn’t want that?!
